A real scandal at the Vatican and Ratzinger's part in it

One thing people often forget is just how large and labyrinthine, indeed Byzantine, the Roman curia is. Even popes have trouble at times enforcing their will upon it.

In fact, the then Cardinal Ratzinger had to ignore the wishes of Pope John Paul II to begin an investigation of Fr Marciel and had his efforts to investigate claims of paedophilia levelled against the cardinal archbishop of Vienna frustrated by the Vatican's old boys club.

If you visit the website of the National Catholic Reporter you will find a story of Vatican skulduggery to make you gasp. It involves the Legionaries of Christ, a priestly order founded by the late Fr Marcial Maciel Degollado, a Mexican paedophile priest who used its money to pay off his young male victims and the mothers of his illegitimate children. This much we knew.

But the NCR, an American paper whose Leftist bias usually rules it out as a source of impartial information, has done some digging into the finances of the Legionaries and their lay arm, Regnum Christi, and uncovered wrongdoing on an astonishing scale.
